The University

Whereas Milano has an old tradition in culture and higher education, the University of Milano - Bicocca is quite new. Its first degree courses started in 1991 as part of the old State University of Milano, but it was not until 1998 that Milano-Bicocca University became independent.

So don't be surprised if you never heard the word "Bicocca" before! The University takes its name from the area called "Bicocca", formerly one of the main industrial areas within the city of Milano.

Today most production activities have moved elsewhere, making room for the University campus as well as for the headquarters and research centers of a number of national and international companies.

Some of the CNR (National Research Council) Institutes are also located in this area. It is an ideal environment for a new University aiming at scientific research and teaching at the highest level.

Presently Milano-Bicocca counts 8 Faculties. In the scientific field Milano-Bicocca is characterised by innovative Degree Courses, such as Material Sciences, Biotechnology and Environmental Sciences.

Milano - Bicocca also has a Faculty of Medicine with a Degree Course in Medicine located at the San Gerardo Hospital in the nearby town of Monza.
